An ideal paragraph has to ensure some qualities. Firstly, it has to focus on a particular point which is known as the main point or topic sentence. Without this topic sentence, a paragraph can be very confusing. Secondly, it has to develop the main point through specific details. The sentences used for providing such details are called developers. Developers must stick to their main point. If they do not stick to the main point, writing will be very vague. it must ensure unity. It means a single purpose. In a paragraph or essay, developers must work together to establish the main point or topic sentence/thesis statement. Thirdly, it must maintain coherence (the main idea should be clearly understandable). We can achieve coherence in our writing by organizing details in proper order, be it chronologically, spatially, or emphatically. We decide the order based on the kinds of details that we have composed and on our focus, our purpose, and our readers. There is another way through which we can achieve coherence: using connectors (transitional words and phrases). We use connectors between ideas within a sentence, between details in different sentences, and between ideas in different details in different paragraphs. This link between sentences, words, and phrases is called cohesion. Fifthly, each paragraph should be organized logically and flow smoothly. In this regard, we can use the required connectors which help the idea flow smoothly. Finally, sentences should be grammatically correct. Here, we have to be aware of grammar, sentence structure, spelling, punctuation, and capitalization.
