15th August is the
national mourning day because our father and the first president of the nation
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was assassinated on 15 August 1975. As a
result, the whole nation came under army rule for the next 15 years. Though democracy again came into operation with the restoration of the parliamentary
system in 1991, the nation had to wait another five years to make 15 August the
death anniversary of the country's beloved son to recall and mourn the brutal
murder of the country's first president who also led the independent movement
for the nation against West Pakistan. We the whole nation have been observing
the 15th of August as a national mourning day since then. The day remains a
public holiday. The national flag is flown at half-mast everywhere to mark the
tragic incident of 1975. Prime Minister and other political leaders offer
wreaths at the portrait of the father in front of the Bangabandhu memorial
museum at Dhanmondi Road number 32 in the capital. All the government and semi-government
organizations organize cultural events to show respect and recall the tragic
incident. Print media and electronic media publish a special supplement to mark
the day as one of great solemnity and the nation’s first leader is shown great
honor and respect.
