Who has not heard the name of the small but beautiful town named Hamelin? This beautiful town once became full of rats. Their free movement throughout the entire town turned the beautiful dwelling place into hell. They tortured the citizens of the town making holes here and there, cutting people's clothes, tearing important papers, biting babies, and spreading diseases. The citizens finding no way to get rid of the torment of the rats decided to meet and seek help from the mayor.
Some noble persons in the town met the mayor and one of them raised their proposal, "We hope that you know how badly the citizens of your town are suffering from the torture of the rats. If you don't take any effective steps immediately, we have to leave the town."
The mayor arranged an important meeting among the government representatives. Many of them spoke a lot and offered many solutions, but none was convincing and accepted. Suddenly, a young person wearing colorful and bright cloth knocked at the door. "Come in", someone responded from the meeting.
Entering the room a young pied piper said, "Somehow I've heard that the existing meeting is seeking to relieve the citizens of the town from the rats' torture." "Yes, we're desperately looking for it", the mayor responded. "I can drive the rats away and restore the peace in town", the pied piper said. "How much will you demand?" the mayor asked him. "Five thousand dollars", he replied. Thinking for a while, the mayor agreed with him.
Bringing out a golden flute from a bag hanging on his neck, he stepped out and walked along the road playing the flute. No sooner had he started playing the flute than all the rats of the town started running after him. He was heading toward a river; the rats were also following him. He stepped down to the river, and all the rats also jumped into the river and drowned and were washed away by the river's current.
When the pied piper went to claim his money, the mayor said, Five thousand dollars is a huge amount I can't give you for a trivial job." The betrayal of the mayor made the piper furious and compelled him to play his flute again. The flute's sound was so melodious and mesmerizing that all the children had to follow him, and the piper led them to an unknown place where nobody could reach to bring the children back. This is how the betrayal of the mayor and the silence of the town's citizens received their due punishment they will remember forever.
