Activity 4.1.1: Read the following statements and choose one answer from the alternatives that match your feelings or emotions. Then, explain, why you think so. Finally, share your responses with the class.
a. Why did the math book look sad? Because it had too many problems!
Do the sentences make you sad, happy, excited or humorous? Why do you think so?
b. Earth is mainly covered by water. About 70% of the planet's surface is ocean.
Do the statements make you sad, happy, curious, humorous, or give you information? Why do you think so?
C. The capital of Greece is Athens, and it is known for its rich history and cultural heritage.
Do these statements give you any information or make you curious, smile, or happy? Why do you think so?
Answer:
a. The personification of the math book in the sentences may be the reason they are deemed amusing. It creates a ridiculous and humorous situation when it imbues an inanimate object, like a book, with human feelings like melancholy. This anthropomorphism gives the joke a whimsical touch that heightens its funny effect.
b. The statement "Earth is mainly covered by water. About 70% of the planet's surface is ocean" gives information. It presents a factual piece of knowledge about the Earth's surface composition. Though it may not always arouse strong feelings, this information may pique interest in the planet's geography and the way oceans shape Earth's ecology. Rather, it engages the brain and imparts world information.
c. The statement "The capital of Greece is Athens, and it is known for its rich history and cultural heritage" gives information and might evoke curiosity or happiness. It provides factual information about the capital of Greece and highlights its cultural significance. This could spark curiosity about Greek history and culture or elicit a sense of happiness or appreciation for the richness of Athens's heritage. All things considered, powerful emotional reactions are less likely to occur from it than good feelings or intellectual interest.

Activity 4.2.2: Now, look at the matching in Activity 4.2.1 and discuss the following questions in pairs/groups. Later, share your answers with the class:
a. Every statement has its own tone- Do you agree? If yes, why?
b. Do you think authors convey their own moods or feelings through their writings? Explain your answer with an example.
c. While doing the activity, how do you identify the writer’s mood or feelings in the statements?
d. Have you ever experienced the tone of the writer while reading any text/literary work? If yes, describe with an example how you know the writer’s tone.
Answer:
a. I acknowledge that each statement has a unique tone. Whether it's descriptive, inspirational, inquisitive, persuading, or contemplative, every remark expresses a certain tone or perspective. The tone of any statement is influenced by word choice, phrase construction, and the overall idea.
b. Whether on purpose or accidentally, writers frequently express their own emotions or moods in their works. For example, if the writer is writing a part about a melancholy character, they could use dark language and imagery to reflect their own emotional state or to portray the character's intended sorrow. Similar to this, if a writer is enthusiastic and convinced about a subject, it may show in their writing and influence the tone of the piece.
c. If I were to infer the writer's attitude or thoughts from the statements, I would look at word choice, the overall message, and any underlying emotions expressed. Descriptive statements use vivid language to paint a picture, whereas persuasive statements use rhetoric to persuade the reader. Reflective sentences may show thought or reflection, whereas inspiring ones aim to uplift and encourage. Understanding the context and intent of the writing helps determine the writer's mood or feelings as well.
d. I've observed the tone of the author when reading a range of works. When reading a novel, there are multiple ways to identify the author's tone: the way the characters interact, the atmosphere the place evokes, and the overall tone of the story. Poetry usually uses rhythm, imagery, and word choice to convey the author's tone. For instance, a poet expressing rage can use powerful language and striking imagery to convey to the reader their own emotional state.
