Comparison of Block Structure and Point-by-Point Structure

Block Structure and Point-by-Point Structure Similarities Differences
1. Both are used to organize compare and contrast essays. 1. Block structure typically includes fewer body paragraphs (usually two), while Point-by-Point structure includes more body paragraphs.
2. Both structures have an introduction and a conclusion. 2. Block structure discusses all features of one subject in one paragraph and then all features of the other subject in the next paragraph, while Point-by-Point alternates points.
3. Both require analysis and comparison of two subjects. 3. Block structure is generally easier to write, whereas Point-by-Point structure provides more detailed comparisons and can be more engaging for readers.

    In this activitystudents will strengthen their understanding of the note by studying the similarities and differences between Block Structure and Point-by-Point Structure.


  1. Tell students to have a brief recap on their last activity in groups/pairs

  2. Ask them what they understood about block structure and point-by-point

  3. Tell students to go through the note of 6.3.1 again and identify the similarities and differences between the two structures.

  4. Tell all students to write down their findings in their individual copies.

  5. After they finish writing, tell them to share their copies with the classmates of other groups to practise peer-review.

  6. You should also check all the copies and provide corrective feedback.

  7. Complete the activity in one class
